Meat is causing Heart Disease

Recent scientific studies show that a person will increase their risk of Heart Disease when eating processed instead of red meat. The study was all over the world with about 1 million participants, and the result was that when eating processed meat, a person increases their chances of Heart Disease by 42% and Diabetes by 19%. The study also showed that these impacts are not carried on by red meat, or also known as unprocessed meat. The study also found that the two types of meat have the same saturated fat and cholesterol amount, but processed meat had four time as much salt as unprocessed meat. As opposed to what was said earlier, scientist are still encouraging eating meat, because they say that the results are not strong enough to have people stop eating meat. I found this article to be very interesting, because I found out that the regular meat that I eat can potentially hurt me. I will not refrain from eating meat, but i will definitely will watch how much I eat, this article helped me watch my health even more.

Is Air There????!

To learn the wonderful subject of air pressure, I did a lab called Is Air There. This lab involved a cup, two rubber bands, and a plastic bag. I used this to measure where air pressure is and observe what affects it has on the plastic bag. Firstly, I had to set up the plastic bag over the mouth of the cup, tightly secured by rubber bands. Next, I had to attempt to push the bag into the cup, but I could not do so, because there was air pressure when I pushed on the bag, resisting me from pushing the bag into the cup. Next, I inserted the bag into the cup, and tightly secured the bag into the cup with the rubber bands. Then, I had to attempt to pull the bag out of the cup, but I could not! The reason is because the air pressure is now on the outside of the bag, so when I attempted to pull the bag, the air pressure resisted me to do so. As a response to the Thinking It Over, by using the plastic bag to cover the cup, the air pressure was inside, so I could not push the bag inside the cup. When I inserted the bag into the cup it was just the opposite, the air pressure was on the outside, so I could not pull the bag outside the cup. Also, the Thinking It Over asked what would happen to a balloon if it increased altitude. Well, the answer is that that air pressure, as the balloon increased altitude, it would be deflated from the increased air pressure. I found this lab to be very interesting, and education. This was a simple lab, but there was a whole lot of science to it.

Greenhouse Interactive

To learn about the Greenhouse Effect for my science project, I did an online interactive at http://forces.si.edu/atmosphere/interactive/atmosphere.html I learned many new things about the Greenhouse Effect, for example, the vital gases that support the Greenhouse Effect are Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Ozone (O3), and Oxygen (O2). Many people say that the Greenhouse Effect is very bad for the environment, and must be stopped, however I also learned that without it, the Earth would be too cold to sustain life. However, too much of these gases, or excess Greenhouse gases,which humans are causing, will cause the Earth to be hot to sustain life. Another cool fact that I learned is that 2.2 billion years ago, oxygen made up .2% of the atmosphere, today it is 21% of the atmosphere. I found this website to be very resourceful and helpful to me, and it will help many other people if they want to know more about the Greenhouse effect. Interactive games like this one make learning about topics not boring, but actually fun.

Radiation Popcorn

For this weeks science project, to learn about heat transfer, I did a lab named Radiation Popcorn. In this lab, I had to put a bag of popcorn kernels in a bag, into a microwave oven, for 1:30 minutes. when time was finished, we had a bag of popped popcorn, but how? This occurred because the microwave oven transfers heat to the popcorn in the form of radiation. Now, the popcorn kernels uncooked have small a droplet of water in them. When these droplets are heated by the radiation, the molecules within move faster and faster. When they are heated to the point, the water droplet will turn into steam. The result is the steam will escape, and allow the popcorn to explode, forming the edible treat of popcorn.

Atmosphere Interactive

This week in science, we are doing a project to help us learn about weather. To learn about the atmosphere, I went online and did an interactive activity, at

This activity helped me learn many new things about the atmosphere, for example, I learned that the Tropopause, is a 12 Km, the Stratopause is at 50 Km, and that Mesopause is at 85 Km. Also, I learned that airplanes average traveling height is just under the Tropopause. Another thing I learned was the temperatures of the atmosphere, the Thermosphere is the absolute coldest, at around 90-95 degrees Celsius. Overall, this activity proved too be helpful for me in a great way, I learned a lot of information, without much effort.

Athletes Foot Bats

In the past 4 tears a mysterious fungus has inhabited over 80 percent of Northern American bats, and killing them. Desperately, a force of scientists is fighting to find a cure for the fungus. However, they can not only use anything, it has to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Finally, they have an unlikely weapon, a drug used to treat Athletes Foot. John Eisemann noted this at his speech at the American Chemical Society spring meeting. He said that using off-label use chemicals have been used numerous times before, on other animals, and worked, like to control white-tail deer populations, with rodents. However, the scientists were scared of upsetting the economical balance of fungi, especially in caves. So they put it into testing, on a few bats, and it was successful in killing the fungi. Now the scientists are looking for if it will decrease the die-off rate, and if they possibly will not have too treat entire colonies.
I really enjoyed reading this article, because I found it especially interesting. I am intrigued by the fact that bats fungus can be treated the same as human fungus. This fact intrigued me so much, to the point I was hanging my jaw open in disbelief. Anyway, I really enjoyed this article, and I am sure there are many intriguing articles like this. My opinion on this article is WOW!!

Mathematics Blog

Global Warming impacts Earth everyday, destroying the beautiful things about Earth, like the Artic, and the living animals. Math and Global warming have a close relationship, because of the statistics of the impacts of Global Warming. For example, the Artic is disappearing because of Global Warming, and math ties into this because about 30%-50% of the Artic no longer exists. With math statistics, you can also estimate the time when the Artic will be completely gone. Also, math ties into Global Warmings impact on land, because of percentages. Twenty to thirty percent of animals are on the verge of extinction due to Global Warming. Also, using math statistics, humans can make calculations too when Global warming impacts a species for long enough, and cause extinction for that species. Finally, Math, with the help of science, can be used to create new devices and gather data to save the planet from Global Warming. For example, math can be used towards the knowledge required to analyze wind turbines, like how much electricity does the turbine generate at a certain speed? How many homes can be powered by this much electricity? Math can be used to make these types of devices more efficient. Math can help save our planet!!

Blog #4

As my last year in Omega continues, I learn many new topics in my science class. We are currently learning about animal classification. So far, I have learned that animals are classified into 35 major phyla. Also, I have learned that more than 95% of animals are invertebrate (animals without a backbone). Finally, the third thing I learned in science class on the animal topic is the four major functions of an animal. The four functions of an animal are the ability to reproduce, movement, able to keep internal conditions stable, and the ability to obtain food and oxygen. I also had the ability to learn about this topic out side of school. I learned that the study of animal classification is named taxonomy. Also, I learned that there is a third kingdom that has animals that bridge the animal and plant kingdom.
Personally, I found this topic to be very entering. Even though I new many things about this topic, I still found it to be interesting, and I did learn some new things. I wonder what new and exiting topics my class will learn in the future.
